Perinatal Doula Services Covered by Insurance

New mothers can take advantage of much-needed doula care thanks to a new Rhode Island law! This is groundbreaking to help new families get the care they deserve.

What Doula Services Are Covered by Insurance

There are requirements that doulas have to meet in order to be eligible for reimbursement. First, only qualified Perinatal Doulas with professional training are eligible. This bill is going to set industry standards, as well as create a statewide registry of doulas. When this happens, it will help you get connected with qualified professionals, like Baby Bloom Newborn Care.

What’s great about this bill is the number of services they cover per pregnancy:

  • Prenatal and postnatal visits

  • Labor and delivery

  • Emotional and physical support after childbirth

  • Infant feeding

  • Breastfeeding support

What Insurance Does Baby Bloom Newborn Care Accept?

We currently work with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island subscribers. For other insurance coverage, fully insured commercial health plans offered by a licensed insurer, along with Rhode Island Medicaid programs, are required to provide Perinatal Doula services, as it is mandated within state law.

If you’re unsure if your insurance is required to cover your costs under this bill, contact your insurance provider directly.

Am I Eligible for Doula Reimbursement?

If you purchased your health insurance directly from a Rhode Island licensed insurance company, you may be eligible for reimbursement with this law.

If you purchased your health insurance through Healthsource RI, you might be eligible for reimbursement.

If your health insurance coverage is through a Rhode Island employer that is considered a small group (under 50 employees), you may be eligible for reimbursement. Please note, however, that some small group employers may be self-insurance. In this instance, they may not be obligated to cover state-mandated benefits. If this is you, please check directly with your employer to see if they provide this.
