Doula Insurance Reimbursement Is Possible in Rhode Island! Take Advantage Today

The main reason new families opt to not have overnight care for their newborn is due to the cost. Now, in Rhode Island, some of that burden is put back on your insurance company.

Thanks to this Rhode Island bill, more families than ever have the opportunity to take advantage of overnight care services for their newborns. It took effect in January 2022 and covers a variety of services.

If you’re expecting a newborn soon, let us help you learn how you can take advantage of doula insurance reimbursement today.

Why Did Rhode Island Propose This Bill?

There was a lot of research that went into proposing and approving this bill. According to the bill, it’s estimated that half of all maternal mortalities and injuries in the US could have been prevented if better care had been available. The US maternal mortality rates are some of the highest in the developed world, and from 2000 to 2014, they increased by 26.6%.

In the US now, 1/3rd of births are C-sections, which cost about 50% more than conventional births. It’s already been proven multiple times that using a doula reduces the chances of needing a C-section by 25%, as well as many other benefits. This bill is finally a step towards helping mothers give birth safely and provide families with the specialty care they deserve.

We think Senator Quezada (the senator who first proposed this bill) says it best:

“There is no question that this bill will save lives and be good for women of color in Rhode Island, but it also makes strong economic sense. Women who use doulas often require fewer expensive medical interventions during childbirth, which will save them, the hospitals, and the insurance companies money and make the childbirth process much easier for all involved.”

You can read the entire bill from the state of Rhode Island online.

What Is a Doula?

A doula provides physical and emotional support before, during, and after pregnancy. This is slightly different than a night doula, who is there to support you, and your baby after you give birth and come home. Night doulas take the night shift, helping to care for your newborn while you get the rest you need.

Benefits of a Doula

As we mentioned before, doulas help reduce the need for C-sections and reduce mortality and injuries, but that’s not all. They also reduce the need for pain-relieving medicine because of the proven techniques they use during labor.

At home, your doula will help you adjust to life with a newborn, especially when you’re a first-time mother. Doulas are there to provide their professional expertise, so you’re not going into motherhood blind. They’ve seen it all and will help you get into a good routine with your newborn.

What Newborn Care Services Does This Bill Cover?

Only qualified doulas who are professionally trained will be eligible for coverage through private insurance and Medicaid. This bill also will set industry standards and create a statewide registry of doulas so you can be connected with qualified professionals.

Some of the services covered for each pregnancy are:

  • Prenatal and postnatal visits

  • Labor and delivery

  • Infant feeding

  • Breastfeeding support

  • Emotional and physical support after childbirth
